Internship and Clinical Rotations

Rotating internships are the final stage of the career, in which students acquire technical skills and knowledge required to secure optimal exercise of the profession in a supervised environment.

Procedures and Institutions

Internships will take place at public and private medical facilities, both local and international, approved by the University’s Academic Board and that hold educational affiliation agreements with the Medical School. Agreements must be previously communicated to the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology (MESCyT). Core mandatory areas to be covered by students during monthly internships are: Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, Psychiatry, Obstetrics & Gynecology, General Surgery, Family and Community Medicine.

The Dean of Health Sciences and the Director of the Medical School may allow students to do an internship in a different program endorsed by the Faculty, as long as the hospital has an agreement with the Medical School and is certified by the Ministry of Public Health.

Students who desire to do the internship at a medical center outside the Dominican Republic, must have the required cumulative GPA and request written permission by the Dean of Health Sciences, via the Director of the Medical School, listing the program he/she will take part in. A letter of acceptance of internship at a desired Hospital, from the Medical Director of the Center and the person responsible for Clinical Sciences Coordination must be attached to the request. The Family and Community Medicine cycle, however, must be completed at a local health facility as established by MESCyT.
